Code M review: Why I watched it

I, recently, got a chance to watch ‘Code M’: an Indian Hindi drama web series on ZEE5. It’s released on 15th January 2020 and is created and produced by Juggernaut Productions. The series stars Jennifer Winget, Tanuj Virwani and Rajat Kapoor. The top reason why I took out time to watch this series — it has all my fav actors. Also, it’s Jennifer’s debut on the web and that too in uniform that made it more interesting to me. The other thing which intrigued me was the title of the show. I was curious to know what exactly would be the code?! It’s a  mystery that revolves around finding the truth. For those who might not be aware of ZEE5 – “ZEE5 is a video on demand website run by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited. It was launched in India on 14 February 2018 with content in 12 languages.

Code M review: Its Excerpt

Major Monica Mehra (Jennifer Winget), a military lawyer, is given the assignment to investigate the mysterious case of a terrorist encounter which also results in an army officer being killed. The way she gets to the truth of the case is what makes it worth watching.

Code M review: Where to watch and its duration

In the past also, I did watch some other originals of ZEE5, but on the laptop. This time I downloaded its iPhone app and it was very convenient to watch. It’s the first season of this show and has only 8 episodes; each show is of 20-30 minutes. We mums of small kids, usually, don’t have the luxury to watch lengthy movies in one go (especially when you are at home), so it’s better to watch such series that you can enjoy at your convenience and availability of time.

Code M review: Its Screenplay

The show reviews must be spoiler-free so let’s not get into further details. Overall, the story is good, which is based on true events. I have seen other original series on ZEE5 and the best part about most of them have been their screenplays — quick and crisp. The message gets delivered without going into unnecessary details. While watching this series, at some points things became predictable but I would say the overall screenplay was good and it surely made me glued to the screen till the climax. I, especially, liked the last two episodes the most. You will be shocked to see some of the twists in the series and the ending is shown quite well.

Code M review: The Performances and The Direction

As I mentioned, I sat to watch this web series because all of the lead actors in this are my favs.

Jennifer Winget as major Monica Mehra has done a decent job in her digital platform debut, but she is the top and high paying TV actress, I had high expectations from her. As an army lawyer, she could have performed better. Otherwise, she looks beautiful and has done justice to the romantic scenes.

Tanuj Virwani as Legal Counsel Angad and Monica’s ex-boyfriend looks fine too. I would say he played his part well.

Rajat Kapoor as Colonel Suryaveer Chauhan and Monica’s Mentor is the one who truly stands out. That’s what you can expect from a skilled actor like him.

Seema Biswas plays a short role but makes a lasting impression as always!

Akshay Choubey has also done a fine job as a director.

I would say this show comes under the category of ‘smart content’ by ZEE5 which will give you a taste of the myriad of flavours — a cold-blooded murder, encounter, casteism, terrorism, same-sex love and smuggling. Go and watch it if you like thriller drama!
